Frequently Asked Questions

What is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is a process of routinely testing portable electrical appliances, using specialist testing equipment, to ensure that it is safe to use. It is recommended by UK Health & Safety regulations that regular PAT testing is carried out. In-service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment is the technical term for Portable Appliance Testing(PAT).

What appliances need testing?

On a basic level, any type of equipment which is powered by electrical energy can be PAT tested.
Landlords must ensure that all appliances supplied to tenants be tested to make sure that they are safe to use. This includes refrigerators, portable heaters, freezers, lamps, kettles, microwaves etc.

In business, all equipment with a plug must be tested. Any equipment which is wired permanently into mains power do not need to be PAT Tested.

How often should appliances be PAT Tested?

The frequency of PAT Testing is dependent on both the type of appliance, the environment it is in and the general condition of the appliance.
Generally, PAT Testing is done on an annual basis. Especially in business and tenant situations, it is important to have a current PAT test in order to assist with insurance liabilities.
Our recommendations for re-testing are based on guidelines set out by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), governing bodies and our own experiences.

What does PAT Testing Involve?

The PAT consists of two parts; the visual inspection and the test.
The visual test is concerned with the following issues:
- Damaged plugs and equipment (burn marks, overheating etc.)
- Correctly wired plugs
- Correctly rated fuse
- Loose wires/screws
- Visible earth wire
- Damaged flexes
The test is to verify the following details, among others:
- Earth continuity testing
- Earth leakage test
- Polarity test
- Insulation resistance

Are there any additional costs?

No, our prices are based on cost per test. Please feel free to call us now on 0208 801 1801 or to fill in our Quote Form and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible.
Minor repairs to appliances, such as replacing fuses and plugs, rewiring plugs are included in the price of the test. We do not charge call out fees.

How long does PAT Testing take?

We can do about 15 to 25 electrical tests per hour, depending on the difficulty of getting to the appliances. Businesses tend to take more time per appliance as access can be more complicated.
